Suozzi wins New York special election, replacing George Santos!

Democrat Tom Suozzi won a hotly contested special election for Congress on Tuesday, the Associated Press projected, retaking a seat in suburban New York and offering his party some reassurance amid high anxiety about President Biden’s political vulnerabilities.

Suozzi beat Republican nominee Mazi Pilip to replace Republican George Santos, who was indicted on a charge of fraud and then expelled from Congress late last year amid revelations that he fabricated much of his life story. The race for New York’s 3rd District — long viewed as a dead heat — played out in a suburban part of Long Island that favored President Biden by eight points in 2020 but then swung toward Republicans, backing Santos by the same margin.

Tom Suozzi called anti-Italian Slur by special election opponent! Italian American organizations condemn her hate speech!

Several prominent national Italian-American civic leaders then appeared remotely and called the “godfather” comments a negative stereotype of Italian-Americans as mobsters as it cannot be separated from the legendary “Godfather” series of Italian Mafia films.

“We are outraged. When you insult one of us, you insult all of us,” said Rob Fonti of the Italian-American PAC.

“It’s not about political affiliation. It’s about right and wrong. You have our support, Tom,” Fonti said.

Robert Ferrito, president of the Order Sons of Italy Commission on Social Justice, said, “It doesn’t belong in politics. It’s a poor choice of words.”

The groups also released a joint statement that said: “As Italian Americans and Italian American organizations, we condemn this anti-Italian attack and demand that Legislator Pilip apologize and refrain from issuing any other anti-Italian stereotypes in the future.”

Italian American Democrats endorse Tom Suozzi for U.S. Representative from New York

The Italian American Democratic Leadership Council (also known as Italian American Democrats), the voice of Italian Americans in the Democratic Party, today endorsed former US Representative Tom Suozzi as the Democratic nominee in the Special Election for New York’s 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House, which has been scheduled for Tuesday, February 13, 2024. Tom has devoted most of his adult life to public service as a former Congressman for six years, County Executive of Nassau County for eight years, and Mayor of his hometown, Glen Cove, for eight years.

“We are proud to endorse former Congressman Tom Suozzi in this Special Election,” said Joseph R. Paolino, Jr., Chairman of the Italian American Democrats, former US Ambassador and former Mayor of Providence. “Tom’s campaign presents a great opportunity to elect an experienced, values-driven, Italian American leader to the U.S. House.”

“I’m so grateful to receive the endorsement of the Italian American Democrats,” said Tom Suozzi. “My father, the late Joseph A. Suozzi, was born in Italy, in Ruvo del Monte, near the City of Potenza, in the Region of Basilicata.  My paternal grandfather, Michele Suozzi, had immigrated to America first, followed by my grandmother Rosa Ciampa Suozzi, with my father, who was about four years old at the time.”  Suozzi continued, “I’m a first generation American who grew up in Glen Cove.  With my wife, Helene, we raised our three children there.   And I am proud and encouraged by the support of great organizations like the Italian American Democrats to work day and night to deliver for the people of this District, to make living here more affordable, safer and better.”

In endorsing Tom Suozzi, the Italian American Democrats pointed to his proven commitment to supporting Italian American values, such as the importance of family and giving back to the community.  In Tom’s case, that community extends from Massapequa and Levittown to the north shore of Nassau, to northeast Queens.   He came to Congress with experience in legislating and a deep understanding of the citizens of New York’s 3rd Congressional District.  And he thinks they deserve better. As Tom said very recently, “I delivered for this district before, and I will do it again by putting people ahead of partisanship.  Let’s reject the nonsense and get back to work!”

Sen. Joe Manchin announces he won’t seek reelection in 2024

The long-awaited decision by the red-state Democrat means the party faces an uphill climb to keep its narrow majority in next year’s election.

Manchin, who’s 76, says he accomplished what he set out to do for his home state. But he added he’s not done with politics.

“I will finish my term while traveling the country and speaking out to see if there is interest in building a movement to mobilize the middle, find common ground, and bring Americans together,” Manchin said in a video posted online.

Rep. Jennifer Wexton will not seek reelection as diagnosis changes

Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-Va.) promised this spring to persevere as she revealed a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis that stilted her movements and slurred her speech, hurdles she hoped to overcome while serving a competitive Northern Virginia district.

But as Wexton, 55, failed to respond to treatments as hoped, this summer she found herself confronting a more serious diagnosis: progressive supranuclear palsy. Her instinct — the same thing that propelled her from the state Senate to Congress — was to fight. The rare neurological disorder — often mistaken for Parkinson’s ….
